Dance class is about more than learning steps. A dark colored leotard shows hip alignment. Short sleeves and spaghetti straps allow the teacher to see the shoulders and back for postural corrections. Hair up is important for balance and spotting during turns. Light color tights give the teacher a view of the leg muscles, knee alignment and use of the ankle. Shoes are the dancer’s instrument. They should fit properly for dance and provide the teacher a good view of the foot. Full sole leather Ballet slippers support the child’s foot making the dancer work the sole of the foot. With well fitted slippers a teacher can readily correct clenched toes, sickled feet and weight placement needed for posture and balance. Tap cleats must have a good sound and the dancer’s toe must be over the cleat. The correct dancewear allows the teacher a full view of the dancer’s posture and use of muscles enabling the dancer to be properly taught.
